Over the past few months the band Spooky Monkey, in collaboration with Culture Venture and MAD about Video, have been working on a research project funded by Arts Council Malta to investigate the idea of playing a live music performance in Virtual Reality. A survey has been launched asking participants about their impressions regarding music performance in virtual reality.
Spooky Monkey are a band that have always challenged the medium of live performance. They now seek to explore the virtual medium of expression because they believe that it will allow them a certain amount of creative freedom by breaking away from the traditional format of a live performance.
This project will be Culture Venture’s first production in virtual reality. The outcomes from the research will support the development of other artists and performance events using innovative technology. The audience research component of the project will also provide an important insight into trends for concert goers measuring perceptions and engagement of the virtual reality experience pre and post concert.
